MNL Pleased with infrastructure roundtable with federal ministers

June 29th, 2012
Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Denis Lebel and the Honourable Peter Penashue, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, met yesterday with the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works for Newfoundland and Labrador, members of the municipal sector, construction industry and business leaders to discuss an outline of a new long-term plan for public infrastructure.

Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador President Churence Rogers participated alongside City of St. John’s Mayor Dennis O’Keefe and Chair of the Atlantic Mayors Congress CBS Mayor Woodrow French in the first of a series of regional roundtables on a long-term infrastructure plan hosted by Minister Lebel.

MNL President Churence Rogers said, “We were pleased to be invited to these consultations with both federal and provincial ministers, and communicate directly to them that future infrastructure funding should be flexible. In this province we have a huge variation in our members and their needs, infrastructure investments must be useful for small municipalities as well as large.” Rogers continued. “Speaking on behalf of the municipal sector I was delighted to hear Minister Hedderson echo our message of the need for flexible infrastructure funding for rural areas in Newfoundland and Labrador and that he understood the importance of permanent investment in relation to a municipality’s ability to plan.”
