Engaging towns and cities regardless of size is essential in promoting awareness in green projects which improve our environment.

Tidy Towns strives to educate and encourage municipal councils to develop environmentally sustainable plans for their communities. It is our hope that the Tidy Towns competition will be the catalyst for councils and residents to work collectively to implement positive changes and improvements within their communities.
Although winning is awfully fun, Tidy Towns recognizes it is more than just the chance of winning. This programme stresses the benefits participating towns receive from the competition greatly outweigh any placement awarded. These benefits become apparent as communities prepare for evaluation day. Gardening, landscape improvements, painting, general clean ups as well as planting flowers and trees provide physical activity as well as offer opportunities to develop new friendships and alliances. Special initiatives requiring community groups and business working together on projects such as clearing and marking trails and walkways as well as recycling and composting projects also improve the strength of municipalities.
Tidy Towns is not a solo endeavour.
We call upon the province's civic leaders to help spread the sense of community pride by supporting Tidy Towns initiatives. Municipal leaders contribute to the maintenance and preservation of their town's natural and cultural heritage. Councils investing in projects such as environmental conservation, community involvement, landscaping, horticulture and waste management succeed in creating improved resources, greater economic growth and healthier citizens.
Tidy Towns encourage mayors and councils to provide support to their Community Enhancement Committees. Creating awareness and promotional efforts such as posting notices in bulletins and newsletters provide exposure for the town and give the committees and volunteers much needed municipal support and encouragement. Volunteers are the grassroots of this programme and the key ingredient for success is community cooperation.
